The Effect of Attention Bias Modification Training on Intrusion in Analogue Trauma

Abstract
The attentional system of anxious individuals is biased in favor of threat-related stimuli. Results of attention-bias studies in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been inconsistent, suggesting biases towards and away from threat. The aim of the present study was to examine whether attention bias modification (ABM) and inversed attention bias modification (I-ABM) could reduce intrusive memory of analogue trauma. Fifty-four college students were randomly assigned to one of ABM, I-AMB or attention control condition (ACC). This study used the dot-probe task to manipulate attention towards (I-ABM condition) and away from threat (ABM condition). The design of study was 3(treatment: ABM, I-ABM, or ACC) ¡¿ 2(block order: neutral block first or trauma-related neutral first). The results of this study can be summarized as follows: First, there wasn't a difference of intrusion frequency between ABM and ACC group. Second, I-ABM group had lower than ACC group for the frequency of intrusion. Third, in I-ABM, trauma-related neutral first condition was smaller than neutral block first condition for the frequency of intrusion. These results suggested therapeutic effect of exposure to threat stimuli. Finally, the limitations of this study were discussed along with suggestions for further research.
